Music is a collection of sounds. If you want to end up with an exceptional mix then you need to start with great sounds. Getting great sounds is about being able to hear the nuances between everything from different types of snare drums to a properly balanced mix vs an unbalanced mix. It's about finding the best tone for your instrument and the best mic placement to capture the sound perfectly. Great sounds create a solid foundation on which to build an exceptional mix.
Sounds are made up of frequencies and when you understand and identify the frequencies you hear, you can manipulate them to work for you.
- When you can identify the frequency that is muddying up your mix and causing the vocal to be hard to hear, you can remove it and create instant clarity.
- When you can instantly identify the annoying frequency causing feedback in your live performance, you can get rid of it and have a much better show.
- If you have multiple guitars and can’t hear the separation between them, understanding frequencies lets you sculpt the tone of the guitars to create definition and a fuller and cleaner mix.
